THE HISTORIC HILL

Set along Pine Street Loop, this parcel includes 48 acres of forest, meadows, a large pond, and structures associated with this historic homestead. The most notable feature is the large hill that has served as a community recreation site for a half century. KLT staff and board have made no secret of their dreams for this property. Prime for conservation, education, and recreation, this parcel will augment the community benefits of Pine Street Woods.

BIKE & HIKE TOO

The Sled Hill isn’t just for winter. Open year-round, discover calf-burning trails that wind through the forest along the sledding hill and back down to the trailhead or continue on the Sled Trail into Pine Street Woods. Wide and narrow trails are a playground for hikers and bikers alike.

AND SWIM IN THE POND

The quaint pond built by Joe Weisz, the former owner of this property, is a Camp Kaniksu favorite! And you can enjoy it too. Future plans include stocking the pond to teach kids to fish and a shoreline trail.

A HOME FOR KANIKSU FOLK SCHOOL, KANIKSU LUMBER, & A FEW OTHER THINGS

The conspicuous red pole shed - which has been coined “The Sled Barn” - houses lifelong learning programs through Kaniksu Folk School. Also an event space and community venue, The Sled Barn sees a lot of activity.

Down the road, the old woodshed is the permanent home of Kaniksu Lumber; a mill site for processing windblown and diseased trees from Pine Street Woods into lumber for small projects.

The Cedars is a lovely outdoor event venue complete with stage and twinkle lights surrounded by an enchanting ambiance.

AND THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO COME

We are just getting started! With input from community focus groups and local land experts, we have developed a master plan for this 48-acre parcel. In the coming months and years we will be rolling out new features and amenities including new trails, the Plum Crazy Orchard and educational garden, an art installation, picnic area, and more (as funding permits, of course).

Winter Play at the Sled Hill

This hill has been our community’s winter recreation hot spot for a half century! And now, it belongs to all of US! Here’s everything you need to know about playing at The Sled Hill at Pine Street Woods:

  • No user or entry fee: But, since this hill is a community space, your donations will go toward its care and keeping. Thanks! You can donate to help out here.

  • Parking is limited: Per the City of Dover, there is a 20-car maximum on site. If you can carpool, that’d be great.

  • New parking lot! Now you can park by the Red Sled Barn - less walking to the hill, and with no cars at the base, sleds can go on and on and on…

  • About your dog: The dog policy at PSW applies here; keep your dog(s) within 10’ of you at all times, either by voice control or on a leash.

  • More on dogs: Keep dogs from trampling all over the sledding track (and for petes’ sake, don’t let them poop there). If your dog tends to “rescue” (joyfully) screaming children by clawing and biting them as they are sledding, please leave him/her at home.

  • Private Residence: The house is a private residence and is not open to the public.

  • Got Sleds? BYO sled if you can. We will have some available - if we can keep them from breaking. Also, inner tubes are crazy fast and not recommended for safety reasons.

  • Got questions? Call us: (208)263-9471, or email us: info@kaniksu.org, or message the PSW community on WhatsApp.

  • Trails: There are currently two trails on the sled hill property. One is a wide trail for foot and bike traffic, and reserved for nordic skiing in winter. The other (on the east side of the property) is a narrow trail for foot traffic and bicycles.
