Wood that does good
From our mill operator:
If you have been to PSW recently, you have observed forest management in action. Maintaining a healthy forest is an everyday task, and at PSW we strive to observe the basic forestry rule of only harvesting trees that are at economic maturity, meaning that they are dying faster than they are growing. Windfall is a great example and is the primary driver of our recent logging activity.
When possible, we extract fallen logs to generate lumber, reduce fire risk, and stop the spread of disease. When removing logs, we also assess the immediate vicinity for additional dead, dying, diseased, or damaged trees. Some of these logs are transported to commercial mills to help pay the bills at PSW; others remain at the community forest to supply Kaniksu Lumber.
We currently have a deck of nice logs available for custom milling as well as a limited stock of one-by and two-by mixed species lumber. Logs on hand include a big ponderosa that fell near the top of the Sled Hill, which would make some nice slabs. We also reserved several premium 16-ft logs from our recent logging project that will make 12" boards. We have accumulated a decent stack of cedar logs that will make up to 6" by 16-ft lumber. Orders are filled in the order they are received and milling occurs as time allows.
Got a project?
Cedar: $3 per board foot

BEAUTIFUL. AFFORDABLE. SUSTAINABLE. LOCAL.
Kaniksu Lumber is a community-based forest products initiative operated by Kaniksu Land Trust. Located in Sandpoint, Idaho, Kaniksu Lumber is dedicated to providing economical building products while supporting sustainable forestry practices, local production, and educational opportunities. These wood products are sourced directly from Pine Street Woods Community Forest, processed on-site using a mill owned in partnership with Bonner Soil and Water Conservation District, and directly marketed to the Greater Sandpoint community.
Through generous support from the Weyerhauser Family Foundation, KLT's Kaniksu Lumber initiative also includes educational components that emphasize sustainable forest management strategies and the many benefits of working forests. Our hope is that there is an opportunity for all ages and abilities to learn about, play in, and connect with the forest at Pine Street Woods.
