We are in this together
At Kaniksu Land Trust, we believe strong communities grow from deep roots—connection to place, shared purpose, and access to opportunity. Through projects like our Community Housing Trust, Kaniksu Lumber, Aster Garden Center, and community partnership work, we’re tackling real challenges with conservation-minded solutions. Whether building affordable homes, supporting the local economy, or cultivating spaces where people and nature thrive together, our work strengthens the fabric of community resilience—ensuring the Kaniksu region remains a vibrant, grounded place to live for generations to come.
Our Community Housing Trust work in partnership with LEAP, a Boise-based housing non-profit, is helping local families put down roots by creating permanently attainable homes right where they live and work. By keeping land in community ownership, we’re ensuring that housing remains accessible—not just today, but for generations to come. It’s a conservation-minded approach to one of our region’s biggest challenges, building stability, equity, and belonging while preserving the character and heart of our communities.
Kaniksu Lumber turns local forests into learning labs and conservation opportunities. Using a portable sawmill at Pine Street Woods, we transform sustainably harvested logs into lumber that supports our communities home building projects. Lumber from the mill is also utilized to support trail structures, education spaces, and community projects. It’s hands-on stewardship in action—where forest health, craftsmanship, and conservation come together to create something lasting and local.
Kaniksu Land Trust’s Montana projects focus on strengthening the connection between people, land, and water across Sanders County. From Thompson Falls to the Bull River Valley, we’re teaming up with local partners, landowners, and agencies to protect working lands, improve public access, and support outdoor learning. Whether it’s conserving family ranches, helping plan community trails, or fostering youth education programs, our work in Montana is all about keeping rural landscapes thriving and communities resilient—today, tomorrow, and forever.
Aster Garden Center is more than a nursery—it’s a community hub rooted in connection. As Kaniksu Land Trust’s new home, Aster brings people together around a shared love for nature, learning, and local conservation. Every plant sold will help fund KLT’s mission to care for the lands and people of our region, while workshops, volunteer days, and community events make it a place where ideas bloom alongside native plants. Whether you’re reWilding your backyard, attending a class, or just visiting Kitty the shop cat, Aster invites you to dig in and grow something that lasts—together.
