  • Embark on a captivating journey into the world of Japanese textile art by mastering the Persimmon Flower Stitch, known in Japanese as Kakinohanazashi. This beautiful and highly sought-after Sashiko pattern is classified as an intermediate technique, offering a fulfilling challenge for those with basic stitching experience. The Kakinohanazashi stitch creates a stunning, intricate geometric design reminiscent of the delicate layers of a blooming persimmon flower. It is incredibly versatile, making it an ideal choice for a variety of projects. Beyond practical mending, this pattern serves as a spectacular embellishment. It can transform plain items into unique pieces of art, perfect for decorating clothing—such as jacket backs, cuffs, or pockets—or enhancing home goods, including pillows, table runners, and wall hangings.

    Creating a Turkey Wing Broom involves a bit more work than a basic whisk broom, making it a rewarding challenge for those ready to advance their skills. We recommend that participants first take the Whisk Broom & Pot Scrubber class offered in March to build a strong foundation in broom-making techniques.

Learn the folk method of crafting Fire Cider—an herbal tonic cherished for generations—while chopping, blending, and brewing your own batch to take home. You’ll also explore simple record keeping, a key skill for home apothecaries and community herbalism, so you can track your creations and remember your remedies.

    Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned plant lover, you’ll discover why Fire Cider is made, how to do it safely using traditional, accessible methods, and how to label and track your tinctures. Make connections with your neighbors and the land that provides the herbs, spices, and roots that nourish us.

    You’ll leave with a jar of medicine, a deeper understanding of plant traditions, and the confidence to continue making your own remedies at home, all while feeling part of a community that values connection, craft, and the wisdom of the land.

Bri's instructional style is known for its soothing approach, making this workshop perfect for beginners. You'll discover the fascinating process of coiling and sewing pine needles to craft your very own small basket.

  • Guided by the skilled artisan woodworker, Shaun Deller, and renowned birding expert, Rich Del Carlo, this workshop invites you to explore and celebrate the songbirds of our region. Begin your journey with a birding walk through Pine Street Woods, where Rich will help you identify the bird species you see and hear.

    Following the walk, learn basic woodcarving techniques as you sculpt a small songbird from a pre-cut wooden form. Your carved bird will be mounted on a wooden base and painted to replicate the intricate color patterns of your chosen species.

    No prior woodcarving or birding experience is necessary, and all tools and materials will be provided.

  • Imagine the satisfaction of using a broom daily that you created with your own hands, or the joy of gifting it to someone special. This durable broom is designed to be a treasured household item, ready to be passed down to your children someday.

    Under Brad’s expert guidance, you will learn to intricately wrap 2-3 layers of broom corn tightly around a wooden handle and weave the stems into an attractive pattern. As you sew lines through the broom corn and trim it to perfection, you’ll craft a one-of-a-kind broom that is not only functional but also a beautiful symbol of craftsmanship.

    Participating in this workshop is more than just learning a new skill; it’s about connecting with the heritage of broom making, embracing sustainable practices, and fostering a sense of community, helping us reconnect with nature and each other, bridging the gap between past and present.

  • Blacksmith Nick Belfry invites you to stop searching for the perfect tool and start making it. Can’t find a filet knife that feels right in your hand? Did your favorite lathe gouge chip at the worst possible moment? Stalled out on a project because the draw knife of your dreams simply does not exist? Bring a sketch and a spark of curiosity. Nick will help you turn raw steel into the blade you’ve been wishing for.

    You’ll learn the fundamentals of forging, heat treating, and grinding, shaping hot metal at the anvil and coaxing it into something both useful and uniquely yours. Along the way, you will gain the confidence to understand what makes a blade strong, sharp, and suited to your craft.

    You will leave with a custom tool, yes, but also with stories to tell and a deeper sense that you can make what you need in this world.

    Adults and 16+. Younger teens welcome if accompanied by an adult.

  • Transform simple materials into a sturdy, beautiful pack basket ready for adventure. Whether you are hiking at Pine Street Woods, swimming at Lake Pend Oreille, or picking huckleberries at Schweitzer, your Adirondack style basket will be a practical and eye catching way to carry what you need.

    To complete the project in one day, you will weave a child sized basket, about 14 inches tall, with adjustable straps and your choice of personalized colors. Amy will guide you step by step through the weaving process, sharing techniques rooted in tradition while helping you craft something that fits your own style and story.

    Reconnect with your hands, gather with neighbors around a shared table, honoring a time tested craft with materials derived from the landscapes we explore. You will leave with a basket ready for trails and shorelines, and with the satisfaction that comes from making something useful from start to finish.

  • In this foraging experience, you’ll learn to confidently identify local herbs, understand the best times to gather them for maximum potency, and explore how to prepare and use them in remedies that support your health and wellbeing.

    Step into traditions passed down through generations, learning not just the plants themselves, but the wisdom of working with them responsibly and mindfully.

    Whether you’re a curious beginner or an experienced herbalist, you’ll leave with knowledge, hands-on experience, and the confidence to harvest, prepare, and use the herbs around you, anchored in respect for the land and the centuries of knowledge it holds.
