  • Our ancestors have used natural pigments since prehistoric times. Evidence can still be found of paintings as old as 45,500 years—preserved in caves scattered throughout the world. Ink originated much more recently in our collective history, emerging in both China and Egypt around the same time period, about 4500 years ago. Some of the more obscure inks were sourced from ground up mummies, the mucus of Murex snails, and the urine of cows!

In this class, students will tap into this age-old tradition using readily available materials found within the home and out in nature. Working alongside artist Amy Stephensen, the class will create inks needed to make their own art and leave with their own artwork and ink bottle.
