  • Come to Aster Garden this Father’s Day weekend and learn how to build a nest box for Western Blue Birds that you can set up at home or gift to Dad. It’s a little late in the season for these birds to nest in the box this summer, but you will be prepared to welcome the blue birds back next spring. The wood will be pre-cut and tools provided for you to assemble your own bird house.

    KLT board member and avid birder, Rich Del Carlo, will discuss the migration of these beautiful birds and why it is important to help provide nesting boxes for them.

  • Have you ever wondered how metal can be melted into a liquid state and then poured into a form to create things like jewelry, coins, medallions, and more? This class will be an introduction to basic melt and pour casting techniques for low melting temperature metals. Weezil Samter will show you the process and provide the historical background to it.

    All materials, tools and safety equipment will be provided. Additional pewter will be available for purchase at $3 per ounce. A variety of molds for casting will be provided and Weezil will also have graphite blocks for sale if students choose to design their own unique mold. Participants must wear close toed shoes and pants for safety.

  • Join me for a hands-on introduction to Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique celebrated for its beauty, strength, and rhythm. In this workshop, you’ll learn foundational patterns and discover how to use Sashiko to transform everyday mending into something both functional and artful.

    Perfect for beginners and seasoned stitchers alike, this class offers a chance to slow down, connect, and create with intention. All materials are provided.

  • Make a useful and beautiful hand broom that’s great for a gift! Using hand and foot tools, you will tightly wrap the broom handle, then sew the bristles into a flat shape. The extra length of the broom corn can be made into a pot scrubber. Moderate hand & arm strength is required.

  • Using a simple twist method of combining wire, students will learn to make their own copper bracelet. Weezil is known around Sandpoint for his skill at making all sorts of beautiful jewelry and art from recycled copper, as well as his generosity in sharing this craft with others. Students will be provided with materials to complete two bracelets.

  • How well do you know the plants around your community forest? Part of being a steward of the land is the awareness and knowledge of the plants that make up your ecosystem.

    Connect more deeply with the living world through nature journaling. Using watercolors and drawing tools, students will practice observing details of the plants and flowers they encounter in their surroundings and document them.

    This introductory class will receive instruction by artist, Amy Stephensen, in different approaches to drawing, color mixing, glazing, and building up values and textures in order to create a beautifully-illustrated journal page.

  • In this class students will learn a type of broom that involves a bit more work than the basic whisk broom. We therefore recommend first taking the Whisk Broom & Pot Scrubber class that is being offered in March. Moderate hand and arm strength are required in this process. We will use foot winders to tightly wrap bunches of broom corn into a beautiful and attractive tool for your home.

  • Learn how to weave this intricate copper wire chain to make a beautiful necklace or bracelet. The method used to make this jewelry is a style of knotless netting which is also used to make textiles. Thursday, July 23 | 4PM-6PM

  • This is a class for kids to learn about how to safely carve wood by making fun and creative little sculptures of pine trees, mushrooms and gnomes from branches. Participants will be provided with all the necessary tools, materials and techniques to feel confident in using a carving knife. Parents are welcome to participate with their kiddo to learn some helpful hints for assisting the beginning carver.

    Learn which types of knives work best, what safety protocols and gear can help prevent accidental cuts and which varieties of wood are easiest to carve.

    Ages 7-14

Venue: Infinity Artistic Ironworks 1019 Baldy Mountain Rd. Sandpoint

  • Join Metal artist Dave Gonzo in learning to draw with fire and metal in 3-D!

    Each student will be creating a piece of art for their garden, home or as a special gift. In this 2 day class, they will learn about and the use of the oxyacetylene torch. Along with practicing the processes and techniques to create the vision they have for their piece of art.

    You will leave the class with not just a piece of art that you created that will last a lifetime; you’ll leave with a new sense of working with fire and metal.

    Students must wear closed toe shoes, pants, long sleeve shirt that’s non-sthenic clothing. (Denim, cotton,wool)
    Long hair tied back.
    Students bring leather work Gloves: (see sample)
    Bring lunch/snack and something to drink throughout the class (water/tea/coffee)
    Studio has no bathroom (breaks will be taken when necessary)

  • Unlock the beauty of hand embroidery and give a favorite garment new life. In this engaging, beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn essential embroidery stitches and techniques for adding thoughtful, artful embellishments to your clothing.

    We’ll work with “Stick and Stitch” botanical patterns to guide your designs, while also encouraging your own creative expression. All materials and instruction are provided — just bring a garment you’d love to transform and enjoy the process of making something uniquely yours.

  • Join Suzanne Tabert for an immersive 3 hour walk through diverse ecosystems to discover the food and medicine abundant in the wild. Drawing on four decades of teaching and the themes of her upcoming book, The Forager's Apothecary, Suzanne helps participants move past the “green blur” to recognize the individual beauty and botanical signatures of our local flora.

    This walk is more than an identification list; it is a lesson in communal ecology.
    Together, we will focus on learning positive identification, distinguishing potent medicinals from poisonous look-alikes, while observing plants in relationship to one another and seeing how natural groupings form the blueprint of a functional apothecary. We will discuss the Rules of the Harvest, including where, when, and how to gather for optimum vitality while honoring the land and those who dwell upon it. Along the way, we will bridge science and story, exploring the medicinal and nutritional benefits of these plants through a physiological lens. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, this walk offers a deeper way of seeing the local flora and fauna.

Sunday, August 16 | 12PM-4PM

  • In this class students will learn the basics of carving functional and beautiful wooden spoons. Instruction will be given in how-to source and select the best woods for carving, how to safely use a knife, gouge and/or hook knife and how to rough out, carve and finish a spoon.

    This is a beginner carving class. No prior experience required. Carving tools and a kevlar safety glove will be provided as well as a pre-cut spoon blank to work with.

Saturday, August 22 | 10AM-1PM

Cost: $40 ($30 + $10 material fee)

  • Make a handmade natural broom, great for cleaning cobwebs from tall ceilings. Wrap one layer of broom corn onto a long light stick, then weave the stems and sew the brush part. This style of broom uses the same skills as making a sweeper broom but is much easier and quicker to make.

    Moderate hand and arm strength is required. Handle wood is provided but students are welcome to bring their own. It should be dried (not green) wood that is straight and approximately ¾” to 1” diameter and 4’-6’ length.

Saturday, August 29 | 9AM-4PM

  • Spend a day making a broom that you can use daily and pass on to your kids someday. In this class we will learn to wrap 2-3 layers of broom corn tightly around a wooden handle and then weave the stem into an attractive pattern. After sewing a few lines through the broom corn and trimming it, this one-of-a-kind broom will be ready for years of service in your home or to gift to that special person in your life.

    Moderate hand and arm strength required. All materials will be provided but if desired, bring your own handle made from a strong, straight piece of wood 4 feet long with a diameter of between 1” to 1.5”.
