  • Hosted by Nick Belfry, its intention is to connect interested people and share blacksmithing knowledge and skills.

    At each meeting, Nick will give a presentation of relevant information, practice skills and encourage members to socialize, connect, and share what they have learned as well.

    Parents must be present for kids ages 13-17yrs old.

    No need to register.

Tuesday, Sept. 16 | 5pm - 7pm

  • Using a simple twist method of combining wire, students will learn to make their own copper bracelet. Weezil is known around Sandpoint for his skill at making all sorts of beautiful jewelry and art from recycled copper, as well as his generosity in sharing this craft with others. Students will be provided with materials to complete two bracelets.

    Ages: 7 and up

Tuesday, Sept. 23 | 6pm - 8pm

  • Come fire up the forge and pound red-hot steel as you try your hand at the ancient art of blacksmithing! We’ll cover basic skills including hammer control, proper heating  and drawing, as well as some intermediate skills including setting down, scrolling and twisting. Your beautiful completed project will make a unique gift or memento!

    Age Range: 13 and up (13-16 year olds need a guardian to accompany)

Wednesday, Sept. 24 | 5pm - 7pm

  • Learn how to weave this intricate copper wire chain to make a beautiful necklace or bracelet. The method used to make this jewelry is a style of knotless netting which is also used to make textiles. Weezil is known around Sandpoint for his skill at making all sorts of beautiful jewelry and art from recycled copper, as well as his generosity in sharing this craft with others.

Saturday, Oct. 4 | 9am - 1pm

  • This class will introduce the basics of broom making including sorting broom corn, slip knots, use of a foot spindle, wrapping and tying off the handle, sewing, and trimming.  Students can expect to make at least two wisk brooms and/or pot scrubbers, probably more.  Broom corn, used to make the brooms, is a type of sorghum grass originally from Africa and reportedly brought to North America by Benjamin Franklin.  Handcrafted brooms have largely been replaced by machine-made but the craft lives on creating useful and beautiful tools and decorative pieces.

  • EGYPTIAN LINK BRACELET

    Learn from the talented wire bender, Weezil. Using recycled materials, students will bend and twist copper to make this beautiful bracelet. Weezil is known around Sandpoint for his skill at turning recycled copper wire into creative jewelry and art, as well as his generosity in sharing this craft with others. All tools and materials are provided.

  • This workshop will be an introduction to Sashiko, an ancient style of Japanese embroidery, and how to apply this technique to your mending projects. All materials will be provided, just come ready to enjoy the motion of slow stitching and have patches ready for your favorite garments. Students may bring a clothing item and receive instruction on how to mend or enhance the garment.

Thursday, Oct. 23 | 6pm - 8:30pm

  • Turn a piece of trash into a beautiful work of art under your hammer! We will cover hammer control, spreading and shaping. We will also talk about the art and science of heat treatment and other aspects of making tools from steel.

Saturday, Nov. 8 | 10am - 2pm

  • Learn basic wood carving techniques by carving the Scandinavian toy horse that has become the informal national symbol of Sweden. Known today as a “Dala” horse, the name is short for Dalarna, the province in central Sweden where these carved horses

    were made for nearly two centuries. The Dala horse is a great practice piece for the aspiring wood carver and also makes a great gift or holiday decoration. Students will be given a rough-cut horse figure to shape and smooth with a carving knife. Knives and a cut-resistant safety glove will be provided. No previous carving experience required.

Saturday, Nov. 15 | 1pm - 5pm

  • Learn the art of coil basketry in this beginner course. Using locally harvested pine needles, each student will wrap, coil and sew together a small trinket basket. Learn these foundational skills to have a life full of containers to fill and share.
    Ages: Under 10 years needs to be accompanied by an adult

Saturday, Nov. 22 | 9am - 1pm

  • Need a Christmas gift for the chef in your life? Make them a unique chime so they can let everyone know when the meal is hot and ready! This rustic project is a joy to look at and use. We will practice designing, bending, tapering, twisting and scrolling while having fun and sharing memories of camping trips and favorite meals! Bring a lunch.

Saturday, Nov. 22 | 1pm - 5pm

  • Come learn to carve and paint a little gnome for your home! Students will learn the basics of how to carve small wooden figures in the Scandinavian tradition of flat plane figure carving, a unique carving style in which only one knife is used and the flat facets from carving are what defines the sculptural form. Each student will be given a pre-cut wooden blank to work with. Shaun will discuss the flat plane carving tradition and the ideal tools and materials needed to get started in this craft. Example carvings will be provided for inspiration. No prior carving experience required. Knives, wood and Kevlar safety gloves will be provided.

    Ages: 15 and up
