The Cure For a Rough Day

August 28, 2025 I By Katie Cox, Executive Director

Dear Friend,

This past weekend, while out for a run in the Syringa Trail System, I was reminded in the simplest and most joyful ways and reasons why the work we do together matters.

As I made my way up Greta’s toward the signboard, a man on a bicycle came climbing past. We crossed paths again at the signboard where he excused himself, did a little circle and rang the bell. As he rode away he said “It’s tradition!” You could tell this little ritual  brought him joy. At the signboard I listened as two women talked, one a seasoned trail user happily orienting her friend who might have been there for the first time. She was pointing out the map and particular trails, sharing where they were headed, and—more than anything—sharing her love of this special place. A little further along I met a young family: parents and their son on an afternoon ride. They laughed as they explained to me how their “quick hour” visits had turned into long, adventurous days together as they wandered the trails and let themselves get joyfully lost.

Each of these encounters was a reminder for me  that trails and open spaces are not just about exercise or scenery—they are about connection, joy, and renewal. And as research has shown, time in nature truly changes us. It quiets the noise in our minds, eases worry, and lifts our spirits. Scientists have found that simply stepping outside into natural spaces reduces the tendency to dwell on negative thoughts and helps us feel lighter, calmer, and more at peace.

This is exactly why we do our work: to care for the lands that care for us, so that every person—on a bike, with a friend, or with family in tow—can find those moments of delight and restoration. I was so happy to see the impact of our work in the faces and voices of those I met that day on the trails.

So next time you’re having a tough day, remember what the outdoors can offer. Step outside. Breathe deep. Let nature do what it does best.

Take care of you. Take care of each other,

Katie
